The way of the serpent
Vigelandsparken (also known as Frognerparken) is one of Norway's most visited attractions with more than 1 million visitors every year.
The unique sculpture park is the life work of the sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) with more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and cast iron. Vigeland was also responsible for the design and architectural outline of the park. A monumental artistic creation with a human message that is well worth a visit.
The theme behind it is the "Evolution of Man", although I have read elsewhere that it depicts the Garden of Eden and the way of the serpent. Specifically the depictions on the wrought iron main gates and doors to the side of the main entrance.
This is one of the sections of one of the doors and shows a man (Adam?) wrestling with a serpent.
The park is one of the hearts of the city. In the summer the park swarms with locals and tourists alike enjoying a bit of fresh air in the heart of the city. Everything occurs from theater to concerts as well as locals playing all sorts of summer games, folk barbequing and people enjoying the outdoor swimming pool.
In the winter cross country ski tracks are laid out and families and individuals alike can enjoy a little inner city skiing. It was here Wee B got to grips with her cross country skis.
I shall doubtless blip more of the park in the future. I´m actually surprised it has taken me so long!
