Mural detail

This ceramic artwork in the foyer of Hillhead Subway station was conceptualised by Scottish writer and artist Alasdair Gray and was developed over fourteen months with artist Nichol Wheatley, and completed in 2012. Gray stated,  The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the old BBC building and Botanic Gardens had been among my favourite places since the age of eleven. I have lived and worked in the Hillhead district since 1969, and I knew I would enjoy depicting it, and those who use the subway, in a symbolic and humorous way."
The first extra demonstrates that art continues underground beside the very track itself. The second depicts the sweep of orange as the train rattles noisily into the station. The Glasgow Subway is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the UK outside London, and also the only one in the UK which operates completely underground.
