Pecan Farm
The pecan orchards have recently gone through one of its three annual irrigations. With the monsoon rains, the groves will not need to be flooded again until late October/November.
The largest irrigated pecan farm in the world, the Green Valley Pecan Company produces the world's most sought after pecans. The company maintains nearly a quarter of a million nut trees. You can see in this picture that this year they have planted new trees, to eventually replace trees past their quality nut production life.
A mature pecan tree requires nearly 34,000 gallons of water each year — 700-850 gallons of water per pound of nut yield (generally 40-50 pounds per tree per year) They yield 21-24 million pounds of nuts annually.
Driving along the 12 miles of roads which either encompassed or split the grove, is not only peaceful but pretty awe-inspiring.
