Hanstein
We made a trip to Hanstein, another symbolic castle located in Thuringia. The 19th century people were highly interested in derelict places and Göttingen students discovered this castle for their excursions and fraternity meetings. They took walking trips there on weekends and in their longer holidays they even hiked from Göttingen via Hanstein to Eisenach and the Wartburg (roughly 100 km).
Hanstein became a very popular tourist attraction. However after the War tourists couldn't get there. Hanstein with its location right on the German-German border it became part of the bstrict and deadly border installations of the GDR.
For me Hanstein had always been a longed-for destination when I was a child. I could see it from far, but you knew you couldn't go there. It was on the other side.
I'm glad these times are past.
