Yeldall Manor, 40 Years
Yeldall Manor in Berkshire is a Victorian building and was originally a private home, and so is much more than 40 years old! But 40 years ago it became a Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, started by my parents. A little later we lived there as a family for 3 years and my newly married sister and her husband also worked on staff for a short time. I was busy going to school and doing 'A Levels'.
Today was the annual Open Day and the 40 year anniversary made it even more special. It's a day for the public and supporters to get a glimpse of what goes on at Yeldall Manor. There are stalls selling plants and jams (grown and made at Yeldall), cakes and crafts made by volunteers, a hog-roast lunch, ice cream, and later on, afternoon tea with scones and strawberries.
There is also a 'Celebration' in the big marquee. There was a lot to celebrate this year. Many of the current residents gave testimony about their journey from addiction to wholeness which is the most moving part of the whole day. There were also reports from staff and my sister even gave a short talk about the early days and the story of how and why the work was started by my parents. It was great to see SO many past residents and staff and volunteers from the last 40 years. So many have served and sacrificed to make Yeldall what it is today. Both my parents are gone now but they would be so proud. I am very privileged to play a small part in this great work!
