An afternoon of book binding...

Dear Diary,

A lovely afternoon at the Shaker village, this time to learn three new methods for making books.  A chain stitched binding, an accordion photo book and a fold out star book.  The first and last were relatively easy to do but the photo book, which required an intricate origami folding technique, was a challenge.  The instructor was patient with us and we all managed to do it in the end.

I photographed the three books on the stairs outside the room we were in, the lovely pumpkin colored paint made for a nice contrast to my books.  It often surprises people to see the bold use of color in the Shaker villages.  The beautiful blue was reserved for the meeting house but everywhere else there was reds, greens and yellows.  A lot of the furniture was painted as well.

It looks like a beautiful day on tap today and Emerson and I will spend a lot of it on the porch or in the studio.  It has been a very busy week and it is time for a little "slow time".  I might putter in the garden as well since just being out there is so relaxing.  It is so good to be home and with nothing pressing on my agenda...a perfect Sunday.
