Thunderton House

We were having a wander in Elgin today when I noticed this carving in a wall and a plaque on the adjoining wall.
Thunderton House is the oldest house in the Main Street in Elgin. It replaced Elgin Castle as the accommodation of choice for Royalty and Mary Queen of Scots stayed there. Just before the Battle of Culloden in 1746 Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed there to recover from flu. His hostess kept the sheets and was later buried in them. In 1800 much of the building was demolished but carvings from the 17th Century entrance can be found in Elgin Museum
