An Embarrassment of Tickets

How many train tickets do two people need in order to travel by train to Thirsk in Yorkshire? Not only that poser question but which is the magic one that opens the gate to the platform? I will no doubt find out as I juggle with them and luggage while a queue builds up behind me at Waverley station.

We are off to spend some time with friends in Thirsk before heading further south to the environs of Bath to celebrate the Golden Wedding of my brother and sister-in-law.
I have even more packs of train tickets taking up space in my bag.
