Normandy Road Trip Day 7!!
The 14th of July in France means one thing, Bastille Day celebrations! Car boot sales, fire brigade demonstrations, marching bands, speeches and public service medal presentations at the town hall, sea shanty choirs, night markets, parades and a grand finale of fireworks set to music!!
Heading along the coast to Deauville from Honfleur in the morning, we came across a village car boot sale where M had a great time rooting around and picking up a few bargains. It wasn't really beach weather in Deauville but the sun umbrellas were out ready and waiting for things to warm up.
After stopping at the famous Pegasus Bridge, we hopped our way along the D Day beach coastline, stopping at various war memorials, before arriving in Arromanches to view the remains of the WW2 Mulberry Harbour walls and listen to a sea shanty choir.
Our final port of call and campsite for the night was Port en Bessin where both locals and holiday makers were out enjoying Bastille evening around the harbour and a second local sea shanty choir. As the sun sank down over the sea, the crowds gathered around the port underneath the Vauban tower where a fantastic firework display set to music was launched from the jetty. After all that excitement, the night market was still going strong so we rounded off Bastille Day with a spot of midnight shopping, as you do!
(Second backblip posted today, Monday. Arrived home in the small hours of the morning and now trying to catch up with backblips, along with all the unpacking... Hope to soon be back on top of things and able to catch up with your journals. In the meantime, thank you for your kind comments, stars and hearts...)
