Butterfly of doom... red admiral
Sultry afternoon but the butterflies were busy sipping nectar from the buddleia.
The red admiral was also known as the butterfly of doom, as it was especially abundant in 1881, the year Tsar Alexandra II was assasinated in Russia. The markings on the underside of the wings seem to read 1881 - though I didn't manage to catch that!
