A day of discoveries.....
.....rich fertile soils and crops of Pukekohe, views of a sweeping coastline, a lighthouse, Awhitu Peninsula and the Manukau Heads and harbour, so much to see and explore, in so little time.
The Awhitu Lighthouse was first built in 1874 and has been refurbished and rebuilt using pieces from the original building. It has been relocated to the Manukau Heads Signal Station platform which has been on this site since 1865, now facing the treacherous Manukau Bar. On February 7, 1863, the Royal navy vessel Orpheus was wrecked with the loss of 189 lives and remains to be the worst maritime disaster in New Zealand's history.
Home for the next few days will be on the other side of this expansive harbour, allowing us reasonable access to the West Coast beaches and the Waitakere Ranges with Auckland city close by.
