The gateway to the new world

We took a drive down to Robe, south Australia, for the night. It was a beautiful and peaceful 4 hour drive - the same distance in the uk would have taken at least twice as long and involved numerous traffic jams, mile of roadworks and a lot of swearing on my part.

Robe is a lovely little town, we had a nice walk when we got here and have had a fantastic seafood platter for dinner.

The picture has a remarkable story behind it. In the 1900s, over 16000 Chinese people landed at Robe with the sole aim of mining gold. The government of the state of Victoria would have charged them the equivalent of their sea fare just to land in that state, so they landed in South Australia instead and walked the 200 miles to the goldfields. This monument celebrates the contribution they made to the local community here at that time.

Lovely weekend away :)
