Darwin's Berberis
The colourful berries of Berberis darwinii.
Charles Darwin came across this bushy and attractive plant in 1835 in Chile during the voyage of the Beagle. It is now widely grown as garden shrub.
The berries of the species were consumed for millennia by the prehistoric native peoples of the region. and I am led to believe that it can be used to make a preserve, reminiscent of bilberry jam.
