Pied Hoverfly
Scaeva pyrastri.
This is an unusual hoverfly in that it has upward curving white bars on its back. And what impressive red eyes.
The excellent Website Nature Spot says that few of them survive the winter so that each year the breeding population depends on migration from mainland Europe.
The Extra gives another view showing the two white bands across its tail.
