Day 25
A long drive through very busy streets to the Cu Chi Tunnels, 25 miles out of town. A huge network of interconnecting tunnels, on several levels, used over a twenty year period as the Vietnamese resisted US forces. It was the base of the Party Committee and HQ of Saigon. CJ went down one of the narrowest tunnels. I managed three which were a bit wider. Scary to find bats flying around in underground rooms. Kitchens, living areas, trap doors, ventilation shafts, hospital area, command centre, we even tasted tapioca root and sugar which they survived on. We saw several traps created by the Vietnamese, quite horrific. A chilling reminder of what this country has gone through in the recent past.
This evening, a very special occasion. Fine dining at the Caravelle Hotel, to celebrate SL & J's 35th Wedding Anniversary. A luxurious dining area, attentive staff, exceptional presentation of delicious French food. A wonderful view across to the Opera House. The Caravelle was the central HQ for diplomats and journalists during the Vietnam War. Opened in 1959, it was then the tallest building in the city.
We continue to feel very blessed by all these experiences.m
