Snake!!!
I was pondering about today's blip when I heard the birds going crazy outside...I recognised their alarm calls and sure enough there was our first snake of the warmer weather season. This is a Boomslang -a highly venomous snake. Fortunately it is a shy snake and its fangs are at the back of its mouth, making it more difficult to inflict a bite.
And now this is what blipping does to one!! Instead of hastily phoning the local snake catcher, I grabbed my camera and had a good photo session (can't say I wasn't a bit nervous and jumpy every time it moved!!) The snake then proceeded to move onto our water tank and then disappear into it, popping its head out at intervals (more good shots for me!) At this stage "my" Cape Robins who are nesting nearby were highly agitated and trying to dive bomb it, so I phoned the snake catchers who were here within minutes. And the young man caught it with his bare hands before it disappeared into the water tank - help!!
So that was an easy blip decision, a bit of drama, and the Robins are once again happy and enjoying the extra treats on the bird table!!
Oh...I also had a lesson on how to catch a Puffadder, another common snake with cytotoxic venom...scary. (interesting to google these snakes) Many dogs have been bitten by Puffadders. Hopefully we won't see too many of them this summer.
