Walk By The Sea

I do like a walk by the seaside, probing in rockpools, watching the insect life and today Tyninghame and St Baldred's Cradle brought several rewards.

Main photo is of what we first took to be a hatch of flying ants, but closer examination suggests they are bees, from the Colletes genus, (Plaster or Polyester bees) which are solitary bees. What was particularly fascinating was their behaviour; a group, on the ground, that became a writhing mass, added to by more until no individual could be discerned, with still more flying around - I thought probably a mating flight but am happy for clarification from all those naturalists out in Blipland. It did look very like a playground fight, though.

Other delights, in extra photos, included a mysterious circle on a rock, probably the action of a limpet or snail; a fish in a rockpool and a Small Copper butterfly on the clifftop - haven't seen one of those for years.

We even managed to return to the car before the rain came.
