Davis the Glutton

This young Douglas Squirrel spent the better part of 15 minutes hanging by his back paws inside one of the "squirrel-proof" bird feeders on our deck, with his face planted in a seed-and-suet cake.

He was so intent on his pleasures that he didn't notice Phil and me creeping up close to the feeder, snapping photos. When Davis finally had eaten his fill -- but was bringing out a last sunflower seed, just in case he might feel hungry again -- he slithered out of the feeder and onto the deck rail.

He looked at us -- very close to him -- and with the braggadocio of youth, calmly jumped down to the deck, trotted a couple of feet away, and proceeded to delicately nibble that last sunflower seed (extra photo), before making his exit via the handy Japanese maple tree next to the deck.

I think he takes after his mother...
