Vaux Swifts

The smokestack of an elementary school in northwest Portland is the swooping night roost for 1,000's of swifts in their migration path north. The playground and play fields are full of people with loads of kids and picnics and the flying and circling is amazing! Two hawks joined the scene but thankfully my eyes were not able to witness any killing and death.

I understand there is a similar site north of Seattle at the former Western Washington mental hospital - okay for the birds but not for all the sick people on the streets?
