St Martin's
This morning the spaniel and I varied our normal route to check the view from the extreme western end of the common. Looking south towards the Downs with the spire of St Martin's Chapel on the left. Its difficult to believe that the A272 runs across the middle of this photograph. The chapel is on the site of Chailey Heritage School and has some intriguing artefacts from Ypres and memorials. I believe it was the last church designed by J N Comper and was opened in 1913. The spire is covered in oak shingle, apparently at the suggestion of Rudyard Kipling. It is said to stand at the centre of Sussex (but then so is the Yew tree about a quarter of a mile away).
