Ominous skies

Lars was worried about the amount of ice between Tasiilaq and the airstrip on the island of Kulusuk.  And gathering high smooth grey clouds indicated that a storm was on its way.  So we decided to get away whilst the going was good.

In fact we only just managed to find a way through the dense pack ice, thanks to the skill and experience of the local boatmen.  At times they got up onto the roof of the boat, looking for areas of open water (a luxury we couldn't have from a kayak).

The danger is that the boat can get surrounded by ice, which then moves in the wind and current, and can crush the hull.  Fortunately we found ways through, though a couple of times we had to push ice out of the way, very slowly and carefully.  The 175hp outboard helped!

Then it was back to Reykjavik, civilisation, a campsite heaving with 4000 scouts on jamboree, tourists and beers at £10 a pint.
