A glimpse of Peru
On the way to Ecuador. There are some Andes on the horizon.
We needn't have bothered getting up at 5.00 to catch a 9.30 plane. It was delayed until 11.00... so the connection at Lima was rather a close fit.
Emerged from the airport at Quito to the sight of a small crowd of people keen to have some of our money and thought "This is like India - I know how to do this"... Street hawkers offering all sorts of small items and looking puzzled when you say no, children hanging about a bit too close, looking appealing and hopeful and ultimately a young man who insists on pushing the luggage trolley the last two metres to the taxi and then wanting a dollar. Well, it's only a dollar...
The taxi driver spoke quite good French, which was a surprise.
The best Italian restaurant I've ever encountered is just around the corner from the place we're staying. This is an unexpected bonus.
So - for the next day or so we will be doing not very much, while we acclimatize to the altitude, which is getting on for 3,000 metres - rather more than we're accustomed to, even from the dizzying heights of Blackheath.
(Just heard a police siren. It sounds like a slide whistle.)
