Bower Bird Blitz!
We had a huge event at Wombat Hollow early this morning. We awoke to an absolute cacophony of noise from the bird baths. There were dozens of really unusual birds, or certainly it seemed that way. We were astonished at the numbers and there wasn't a bird bath that didn't have at least three birds drinking from it.
This story actually started the night before when I went down to fill the bird baths from the lower tank. I was shocked to find two birds in the tank who had obviously tried to drink from it and couldn't get out of the tank as the level of the water was about 18 inches from the top of the tank. I had no idea what species they were, but they were much larger than most of the birds that frequent the bowls.
Well the mystery was solved this morning when on a closer look I realised that our visitors were Bower Birds and boy were they thirsty. They were going crazy for the water and stayed around for some time. I was so sad to think that two of their little family hadn't survived their visit to Wombat Hollow, but rest assured they have been given a lovely final resting place under a flowering banksia bush. This has never happened before and it just goes to show how dry it has been since we headed off to Bundaberg.
