Overlooking the Welland Valley

Rockingham Castle stands strategically placed with panoramic views overlooking the Welland Valley.  The site was chosen by William the conquerer and was an important seat of government during his time.  The castle walls enclose 12 acres of gardens and has a wonderful 400 year old "elephant hedge"-  a grand topiary.  Various events are held here each year. You may remember that we have blipped this before.

The first time I came here was more than 50 years ago when I was feeling very homesick for my Lake District hills.  My new husband drove to the top of Rockingham hill and pointed out the view over the valley.  "Yes, It's lovely, but where is the hill?"   "You're standing on it" he replied.  Yes, you guessed .. .. .. . I burst into tears!
