Breathe In And Out...

Amazing what you can find on a flower stall...

This is a hoverfly of a species common in Britain, Epistrophe grossulariae that we found in the extremely urban centre of Stirling this morning. It was, in fact, feeding on nectar from some cut flowers, some Gerberas, on the outdoor flower stall on the main street. These were covered in individuals of this hoverfly species but, of all the flowers on the stall, only the Gerberas were being visited. I am really pleased with this shot (bighead!) and the extremely bright sunshine this morning really helped, along with the vivid flower. I do wonder from where these hoverflies came to find these flowers, as there is little green space near here. Were they simply passing overhead and spotted the flowers. Are there enough window boxes and patio pots in the city centre to support a resident hoverfly population?
