Saltire Memorial
The Saltire Memorial stands in the grounds of Athelstaneford Parish Church. The inscription reads:
'Tradition says that near this place in times remote Pictish and Scottish warriors about to defeat an army of Northumbrians saw against a blue sky a great white cross like St Andrew's and its image became the banner of Scotland.'
Athelstaneford is important in Scottish history as the birthplace of our national flag. As well as this memorial there is also a doocot behind the church which has an audiovisual display depicting the event. Well worth a visit if you are interested in history!
