Honey Harvest

Today I had a huge amount of fun helping to extract this year's honey from the Woodlands Community Apiary. I blipped the apiary in the Spring, and today I not only contributed several hours' work, but I collected my share (lower right, around 5 lbs.) as well.

The combs are shaved of the pollen crusts and loaded into a centrifuge, then the honey is tapped out through a sieve. I mostly poured it into jars , then capped, rinsed, and boxed them.

The hardest part is to do the various tasks without getting too much honey into the wrong places.

The hives are in the nearby Woodlands Cemetery, where flowers of everything from tall trees to random weeds provided the bees with nectar.

I've been invited to learn the rest of the skills next year, and I'm very much inclined to do so!
