Everyday I Write The Book

Two giants

So day three of the giant statues blips.  This time I went up close and personal with the scary guy outside the station. I felt small next to him, which is an unusual experience for someone who is six feet three inches tall (that's 1.905 meters in new money).

We had a reasonably lazy start to the day then got stuck into the gardening and the endless garage roof project.  This was abandoned when  a summer storm blew up. We had the lot; rain, thunder, lightning, frogs, the four horsemen of the apocalypse ... but when it stopped we went for a walk along the canal into town and shopped for hoi sin sauce and veg at Atif's. This is so my favourite shop, maybe even more so than Wholefoods because it is local and much cheaper and hasn't been taken over by Amazon. The range of spices and ethnic foods of all types is amazing. We even managed to get cellophane wraps for our Chinese which surprised us.

Visited the Dark Side of Woking which is the run down East side of town full of cheap Polish corner shops, closed shuttered businesses and homeless people sitting in doorways. Inequality is an issue even in rich communities.

We stopped for a couple of cocktails and some snacks on the way home at Las Iguanas. We watched the first hour of The Shooter after supper but abandoned it because it was ... well ... crap. I might watch the last bit if I have nothing better to do some time.

Talking of giants ... am reading a book of essays by Wendell Berry. A real giant of the environmental movement. Check him out.
