White Horse Close
Photos of this place before 1960 are very different as it looked very rundown but fortunately it was saved from demolition and restored in the 1960s. There had been several conversions before so it probably retains few of its original features from when the White Horse Inn was there. The Royal Mews had been situated there as it was beside Holyrood Palace before the White Horse Inn and coaching stables were built. One suggestion is that it was named after Mary Queen of Scots’ favourite white horse although she had died long before. For many years the stagecoaches which travelled the Great North Road for Newcastle and London left from the back of the inn. It must have been very busy then but now it’s quiet as few people on their way to see the Scottish Parliament buildings or Holyrood Palace realise it’s there.
Today it was a pleasure to show blippers Susanna and her family from Finland and Stuart9613 and his wife a few of the tourist attractions on the Royal Mile.
