Tim Minchin & Ben Forster in JC Superstar

Last night we went to the O2 to see Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. Written when Lloyd Webber was only 21 it is one of my favourite musicals. Last time I had seen it, my Grandma took me to the The Palace Theatre London where we saw an 80's version which was completely amazing.
The new director of this version Laurence Connor took an entirely different slant to the musical set against the riots in London and across the country and a set looking very much like the steps of St. Pauls with Banksy style graphics. The new director looked at the advent of new "Superstardom" borm from the instant fame shows like X Factor etc that play out on our TV screens and suddenly this musical, Jesus Christ Superstar feels as relevant today as it ever was.

The cast included Mel C who played Mary Magdalene. Mel C was lovely and relaxed with a superb live voice, Chris Moyles as King Herod, a talent show host, Ben Forster who played Jesus and Tim Minchin who was Judas Iscariot.
Ben was incredible and it must be a very hard emotional journey to sing this part on a tour. He looked the part and sang well - a great Jesus!
My stand out performer by a mile was Tim Minchin who was totally incredible. I am a fan of his anyway but his voice was strong and moving. The scene where he takes his own life after betraying Jesus was harrowing but showed what an amazing actor/Singer and performer he is.

A great day out which also included a visit to the British Music Experience and the Bob Marley Exhibition - here is Asa with Bob Marley.

A grand day out indeed
