Line of trees in Augarten, Vienna
As I was walking through the lovely Augarten Park today, I was struck by the trees in such a beautiful straight line, leading, rather bizarrely, up to the hideous concrete tower you can glimpse at the end of the line. A graffiti-covered monstrosity that towers over the park and surrounding area, it is a 'Flakturm.' Built from 1943 to 1944 as a defence against air attacks in WW2, it also housed up to 30,000 troops, had an underground hospital and munitions factory. It is an uncomfortable reminder of the Nazi era for many Viennese, but has been left right where it is - I'm not entirely sure why to be honest, because it is incredibly ugly. The park, however, is beautiful, especially the wild flower garden at the far end.
