to Visit the Calf of Man
The Calf of Man is situate just off the southern tip of the Isle of Man. In total it is about 600 acres in area. In Victorian times it had a thriving farm and mill as well as a smithy.
Nowadays it is a nature reserve and bird observatory. There has been a concerted effort to remove vermin from the island with the intention of improving the breeding chances of puffins and the Manx Shearwater birds. This effort is meeting with success.
The only means of access is by boat from Port St. Mary or Port Erin and a visit makes a grand day out.
It is a little unusual to see both the Bell and the Ling heather out at the same time. Here they both are with the Chicken Rock Lighthouse in the background.
