Drinks with friends
We had a day of being tourists today in Londond. Our friend N came up from Exeter to join us. I had an early start, visited an exhibition at the Musuem of Architecture whilst S had a lie in. We all met up at Covent Garden before S took us to some of the lesser known sights.
First stop was Cross Bones Graveyard. An unconsecrated graveyard for prostitutes, paupers, the destitute and outcast. There is now a small garden on the site and the railings have been decorated with memorials, offerings and ribbons with any information that has been found regarding who was buried there.
We then stumbled upon The George, a pub I was sure I'd visited previously but with no recollection as to why or who with. Established in 1676, it felt fitting to stop off for a wee dram in honour of those at the nearby graveyard.
We got lunch at Borough Market, the massive crowds were definitely worth it for the tasty food. We wandered past St Mary Overie's Dock and the replica of Sir Frances Drake's Galleon, the Golden Hinde. Crossing London Bridge, we passed the Southwark Needle. Often believed to be a memorial to all those who were beheaded and impaled on London Bridge but is actually a marker to where the medieval London Bridge crossed the river.
Past the Monument and on to St Dunstane's Church, only the outer walls of which survived the blitz and now houses a peaceful garden. It was then a quick rush past the walkie talkie building to the Guildhall as we were keen to see the remains of a Roman Ampitheatre that was discovered in the basement. The doorman kindly let us run down for a look as it was very close to closing time.
It was then time to drop N at Victoria for her train and we headed home.
