I had more faith in the seven-years-becupboarded VCR than in the wee converter from the internet, but they have been persuaded to talk to each other. This means that three old desktop computers can be removed from the house, followed by the boxes of old cassettes (once filtered to the irreplaceable and conversion-worthy) and (eventually) the VCR itself.
