Another Day, Another Castle (and a Monastery)
Pete came to Monmouth to join us for a couple of days so we started with coffee at our newly found cafe.
After lunch we took off for Tintern Abbey. A popular tourist spot, the abbey dates from 1131 and lasted until 1536 with the dissolution of monestries after which it fell into ruin. The Abbey stands on the Welsh side of the River Wye which forms the border between Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire. We didn't actually go into the grounds but I was able to get some photos from the perimeter.
After an ice cream at a local cafe we decided to go to White Castle, one of the trio of castles I mentioned yesterday. Though dating from the same period this castle was a bit more complete than Skenfrith with more of the towers standing and water in the moat (see extra).
