Hopefully you have enjoyed the mini historical trip around Liverpool over the last couple of days. As I was back in Speke today, it seemed right to finish the lesson off at Home (!!). So here is Speke Hall in all its black and white glory. Started building in 1530, completed in 1598. Built in 4 different decades, as the house and family grew.
Most of the work undertaken by William Norris II (1500-68). Father of 19 children, sadly never saw it completed, one of his sons (Edward) was responsible for the last wing.
William fought against the Scots at the battle of Pinkie Clough (just outside Musselburgh) and took part in the looting of Holyrood Palace. Over the years he became Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire and an MP.
The last family to own Speke Hall were the Watt family. Richard Watt a Liverpool Merchant bought the estate for £75,500 in 1795. The final chapter end with Adelaide Watt passing away in 1921 never having married or had any children. Now nearly 100 years later the Hall is in the safe custody of The National Trust.
