Blipmeet at a Beck

Thacka Beck was originally just a channel through which water from the Petterill could flow. In Victorian times the beck was canalised with retaining walls and over the years most of it has been covered over, as building work has been carried out. Not much of it is now visible through the town, but I knew there was some of it to be seen, somewhere behind the hospital. I saw this on a map and could have tried to follow it, but I knew a better way!

 Hazelina kindly agreed to meet up and take us to where the Beck flows away from the town and heads for the Eamont River. And here it is looking back towards the town, a picture taken from a bridge I had no idea existed. The extra is looking the other way, as the Beck heads for Pategill and then under the roads to come out at Carelton and empty into the River Eamont. Hazel told us a lot about the course of the beck and where she remembered it. Thanks for coming out to meet us – excellent. We must meet up again and have a longer chat.
