The not-so-dead Snake at my feet...
I looked down at my feet as I was getting in closer to take the photo that features in the first extra when I noticed this totally immobile snake. I stepped back (of course), waited, watched, skirted around it to take my photos. It didn't move a bit. I came to the conclusion it must be recently dead. I couldn't see its head at all as it appeared to be in the undergrowth. Being respectful of all creatures in the bush I didn't attempt to touch it at all (even believing it to be dead). Which was just as well because...
When I returned along this same stretch of track maybe 20 minutes or so later it was GONE. I searched thoroughly but it definitely wasn't there and being daytime it's unlikely something moved it to devour it. I can only conclude it was alive all along and just playing 'dead'. As such, it confirms my long held belief that if you are respectful, most wild creatures will leave you alone.
I think it's a Copperhead (dangerous) as we do have them here - I've had them through my garden - but since I couldn't see its ventral or head parts properly I can't be absolutely certain.
The two extras are of hollows in the tree next to the snake, the first on the same side and the second hollow on the far side which I only noticed on my return.
