Autumn Lady's Tresses
The tiny flowers of the Autumn Lady's Tresses are out now - I found about a dozen on the chalk downs near Lewes this afternoon. Not easy to spot though - they are only a couple of inches high. The species name - spiralis - describes the arrangement of the flowers in a spiral up the stem.
Seen close-up the flowers, which are white with a green centre - look as if they are coated in sugar.
