Chiral
I find the forms of nature fascinating (don't we all?). I particularly love the fact it's so much more than the immediately obvious.
Chiral structures in nature, from shells (and bigger things) down to the molecular (take the double helix of DNA) are so, so important.
I won't go on and on, but one amazing example is that exact opposite configurations (left and right enantiomers) of the same molecule of a drug can have completely different pharmacological effects on the body.
Funny how things we studied when we had to, paled into the oftentimes boring and mundane. Yet time passes and interest is rekindled to a completely different level.
I'm still thinking about that book I reflected on the other day. My good mate and Blipfather recommended I look at Ernst Haeckel. I did and got fascinated with his work from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
He was an zoologist and embryologist and indeed observer of all things natural. He was a gifted, unique artist and produced some amazing natural history illustrations.
I mentioned this to artist daughter F and she got really excited and said she'd bought Haeckel's "Art Forms From The Abyss" for a friend for Christmas.
Shucks, like daughter, like father, eh?
