During the building of the water pipeline (see 6th September) there were long delays and continual criticism was directed towards C Y O'Connor. In 1902 O'Connor rode his horse into the sea and shot himself - just a year before the pipeline was successfully completed.
This is a statue of O'Connor on his horse at South beach near Fremantle, the site of his suicide. A resident of the area told me that this view was probably the best I would get, most times the statue is almost wholly under water.
