Pillar of strength
I always thought of this as a letter box, but technically it is a pillar box. Apparently the first pillar box was erected in the UK in 1853. The original boxes were green, which would not have done much for the aesthetic composition of this shot. The first boxes to be painted red were in London in July 1874, although it took 10 years before nearly all the boxes had been repainted.
Each box is unique in that the door carries the cypher of the reigning monarch for the year the box was made. This box is quite modern in the fact it has "Royal Mail" and not "Post Office" on the door.
