Pizza Togo
A few weeks ago I went in to an Aldi in Memmingen, my first visit in months and as I left, was astounded to see a machine at the exit offering "Coffee Togo". Clearly a resurrection of the current trend to former colonial glory days, a la Brexit. I guess not a bad idea to support the coffee farmers in the former Bavarian German colony of Togo but it does seem somewhat strange for Aldi to get involved in such things.
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the start of colour TV in Germany. At long last the public was to see things in gaudy shades of yellow, purple, green etc. Through the 1950's they had been watching shows such as the first cookery show by a guy who is credited with inventing Toast Hawaii and bringing all those wonderful US canned vegetables, ketchup, turkey, ready made sauces to the German table.
This evening MrB came around with a friend to deliver a DIY Pizza oven. There had been some debate about us adding this fine piece of cooking equipment to our inventory. I had said "No", Angie had seemingly misinterpreted this to mean "yes". To be fair, I have always had thoughts about building one but I know it won't get to be used.
I was actually not feeling too brilliant as they arrived and was having a nap. At some point the noise of the tractor woke me up but I couldn't get the strength to go down to see the monster off loaded.
Later I took a look - sure it will do what it should, so maybe in the near future we could try out a Pizza Hawaii or even a loaf or two of bread. Apparently need to heat it with logs for about 2-3 hours. Perhaps as in the old days, we could advertise a weekly "Baking day" whereby the locals book a time to come around and put their prepared bread dough in the oven. All the old families in the village are known by their "house" names which have nothing to do with their surnames. Our farmer friend Franz is known as Beckenbauer deriving from Bäckerbauer (baking farmer) because 100 years ago, they were the only house/farm to have a bread oven and where everyone would come to bake their own dough.
Daughter Kate & family in Ireland have a weekly Pizza night, making the dough and pizza topping themselves. Today she coincidentally sent a photo of the grandchildren eating the first home grown sweet corn on the cob. Seems amazing that she managed to do this in the Irish climate. So when she is next here, we will get her to make us a Pizza Iowa or Illinois or Jolly Green Giant - no idea what a Pizza with sweetcorn is called.
Much of the day was occupied with following the Facebook, Twitter, Instagram postings from Nogbad. Amongst other things he complaned about the lack of an English language guide at the "Deutsches Museum" in Munich, the world's largest science and technology museum. I had to remind him English is no longer recognised in the continental EU countries.
Here in Bavaria we don't need English and certainly the last thing you will find in a Munich Beer Garden is a "Beer Togo".
Thanks to MrB, friend (name unknown) for the coming culinary delights. Perhaps if you give us enough warning we can supply you with Pizza to go.
Oh and very importantly, friend Kathi came by for an afternoon dip and to shear my head topping. Thanks Kathi, you did the "10 year younger" wonder yet again.
