Flowering Artichoke

I chopped the main head off my 7 foot tall Globe Artichoke and left it lying on a worktop - to my amazement a couple of days later the purple flower emerged and it has just got bigger. 

First time I have grown a Globe Artichoke - hopefully it will survive the winter and next year I will be able to eat the produce.
