The Pink Purple Zep Fest
We left home at 7:15 and were seated in the VIP area of the Plaza de Toros in Estepona by 7:45. Our complimentary drinks cost us 6 euros and at that point we were not sure the 75 euro per head ticket price was a good idea after all. Spanish organisation being legendary as it is!
But we did get a teeshirt, on sale elsewhere for 16 euros, in our goodie bag.
This was to be a 6 hour marathon of 70s' rock, featuring UK tribute bands, Deeper Purple, Whole Lotta Led and Think Floyd. In Estepona? We felt a little dubious.
DP were LOUD, and technically very proficient, especially the vocals to Sweet Child In Time, but the sound was rather unclear and left me wishing for their set to end quickly.
WLL, on the other hand, were outstanding and played mostly crowd pleasers, including of course Stairway To Heaven and Rock 'n' Roll.
TF would have a difficult time pleasing us, as we had seen Brit Floyd in Milan, IMHO the best PF tribute ever.
But these guys were good and gave us a taste of what PF would have sounded like in the 70s, before David Gilmour took them on tour with two lots of drums, two keyboards and two guitars.
So after some excellent versions of old faves, a brilliant rendition of Great Gig In The Sky by a single girl vocalist, and encores of Run Like Hell and Comfortably Numb, we staggered out of the bullring at about 1:30.
We had free entry to the after show party at a nearby club, but after a brief visit, we decided we were getting old and headed home.
Good old Duke was waiting patiently for us, good as gold, having been asleep on the rug at the side of our bed.
