A sad sight
I notice a large and unusual heap on the shore line a week ago and meant to investigate but was distracted. Today I ventured down to see the sad remains of this enormous Leatherback turtle. The Leatherback is the largest marine turtle and one of the largest living reptiles. They are different from other turtles in that their shell is leathery, made from bone and cartilage, and not shell like others. They also have huge front flippers. This poor chap is already decomposing and the bones revealed on his flippers were huge and complex - just like hands. Leatherbacks are an endangered species but each year a few find their way to Ireland. A friend, who is a fisherman, said he had recently seen one which was 2 metres in length. Judging by the beaten down grass, many people had trudged down to have at the beached creature.
Arthouse cinema started again last night and we watched Ken Roach's 'An Angel's Share' - gritty and humours with incredibly thick accents. Tonight some friends are coming for supper and himself is making curries and naan bread - aloo sag (potatoes and spinach) and something lentil-ish and mushroomy. This will be followed by pear tart.
