Staples of life - dates

I went to IKEA tonight as I need more curtains. It's located in The Avenues mall which I thought was surprisingly quiet. Then I was reminded it was Rid and people were fasting.

As I was wandering around I discovered a shop called Bateel which specialises in dates. As I wanted to buy some for my host I'm Cairo (I), it was rather opportune. There was no one there so it was good to see all the dates, gift boxes etc. A kg costs 15kd, and a hand painted gift box with three layers costs 200kd or more than 500 GBP....

At the end of my shopping trip and with well stretched arms I returned for supper - pistachio slice and a date milkshake. Delicious! I'll be going back.
