SARONY
This site in Scarborough was one of the most prestigious Victorian Photographic Studios in the world. Oliver Francois Xavier Sarony, 1820-1879, was born in Quebec and became the most successful photographer of his day.
Oliver became an expert daguerreotypist and established his studio here in 1857 . . . but there was also more to this man than meets the eye . . .
In 1861 the ship Coupland was wrecked near the Spa. Conditions were so difficult that the Lifeboat Amelia overturned. It was left to other locals to affect a rescue including Oliver himself ! He was unconscious for several days afterwards. A few weeks later the Royal Humane Society awarded him the silver medal for bravery.
Hope you all have a grand weekend ahead !
