Vestmanna Sea Cliffs, Faroe Islands
We arrived in Torshavn -- the capital of the Faroe Islands -- early this morning, and I am happy to report that yesterday's weather did not follow us!
We drove to the small town of Vestmanna, where we boarded a boat and went to visit the sea cliffs there. These steep, majestic mountains rear up from the water, and they are home to vast colonies of sea birds. Most of the birds have now left for the winter, but we did see lots of Fulmars wheeling about high above the water. Sheep also dot the green slopes -- how they don't topple right into the sea is beyond me.
The cliffs have lots of caves and small, narrow inlets, as well as some really striking tall fingers of rock. The captain of our boat really knew his way around this area, and drove us through some heart-stoppingly narrow passages bound on both sides by steep and unforgiving basalt walls and pounding waves. It was very exciting, but also a little unnerving! One lapse of concentration on his part, and we would have been dashed to pieces on the rocks.
What a beautiful place this is! Such amazing scenery, lovely green grass, charming grass-roofed houses, and mountains and fjords everywhere you look.
