past glory..

Whittington Castle....

people have been living on this site for over 2000 yrs...the earliest settlement was in the Iron Age. After that the site was built on by following generations until 1220..when it became an impressive moated stone castle.

I have just been reading a series of historical novels about our area, by Elisabeth Chadwick...it was amazing to read how life was then for Fulk Fitz Warin and his wife Eleanor...who lived here.....on the floors...to keep it smelling fresh...they had thick layers of rosemary, thyme and other herbs.....they came from the private garden.....

Fulk and Eleanor transformed the castle from a fortress & garrison...needed because of the Welsh raides.....into a palatial home in the early 1300's...

It is lovely to visit the castle ruins....I pop in every 5 weeks or so...my hairdresser is opposite it...
